The Killion, Quinn and Hand Families of Port Macquarie and Kempsey and their Feeney Family

Thank you to "chinagirl828" for sharing this photo of Mervyn on ancestry.com.au on 19 February 2011 Mervyn Reginald Killion was born on 02 October 1918 in Lismore, NSW.  He was the older son of George Killion and Ethel May Kay.  Mervyn is the great-grandson of John Killion and Jane Feeney.   When he was 21, Mervyn join the AIF and served in the Second World War.  In 1944, Mervyn married Bernice Ellen Peace Benson in Kingsford.  Bernice was also from the Lismore area.  They divorced in 1947.   In 1949, Mervyn married Marie Josephine Petra Hoban.  The marriage was registered at Canterbury.  Mervyn and Marie lived in Sydney where he worked as a dogman, fireman and storeman.  In the early 1980s, Mervyn and Marie moved to Port Macquarie.  Marie died on 08 July 1986. Mervyn died on 2 August 1994 at Port Macquarie.

Ida Killion was the 5th of the 9 children of Thomas Killion and Mary Jane Wood.  She's the granddaughter of John Killion and Jane Feeney.  Ida was born on 16 July 1893 at Smithtown on the Macleay River, NSW. The family moved from the Macleay to Bellingen Heads.  Between 1913 and 1917, they moved to Sydney where Ida's father, Thomas, died on 17 December 1917.   Photo of Ida Killion kindly shared by "chinagirl828" on ancestry.com.au Ida was 38 when she married Russell Weir on 02 January 1932 at St Barnabas, Waverley, NSW.  Russell was born in Armidale, NSW in 1895 - the son of David McMillan Weir and Jane Maria Bowers.  At the time of her marriage, Ida records her occupation as a postal assistant.  The witnesses at the marriage were- Clarice Daphne Benson, Ida's niece, who was 21 at the time.  Clarice was the daughter of Ida's older sister, Maud, from her marriage to Edward George Benson.   William Henderson who was Maud's partner...

Hastings (Austie) Killion was born in 1895 at Smithtown, Macleay River, NSW - 123 years ago today - the sixth child and third son of Thomas Killion and Mary Jane Wood.  Austie died in 1950.  He is the father of Ann, a cousin in our Facebook group. John Henry (Jack) Austin was born in 1916 at Glebe, NSW - 102 years ago today - the second child and only son of Mary Jane (Dattie) Porter and John Alexander Austin.  Jack died in 1985. Cecil Joseph Quinn was born in 1932 at Kempsey, NSW - 86 years ago today - the fifth child and fourth son of Henry James (Harry) Quinn and Ivy Olga Husdon.  Cecil died in 1997.  He is the father of Jo, our "Facebook cousin". Jane Feeney, our many times great-grandmother, had five children with John Killion and five children with Thomas Seward.  James and Richard, the last two children, were twins and died shortly after birth.  The other eight children lived to be adults and seven had children. Thomas, the third chid, was the first of the Killion children to succumb to bronchial illness and the first of the adult children to die.  So on 19 December 1917, 100 years ago, Thomas died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney with the cause of death recorded as "broncho pneumonia".    Thomas was buried the following day in the Catholic section of Waverley Cemetery.  Mary Jane, his wife, and Annie Lyons, their daughter, where also buried there in 1940 and 1975, respectively.  Sadly, the cemetery is not well maintained which is interesting as you pay $10.25 for sheet showing the burial site - included to save others the cost!  Many descendan...

Thomas is the middle child and younger son of John and Jane Killion.  He was born on 10 April 1857 on the "North Shore opposite the Town of Port Macquarie" - the site of the Killion farm.  On Thomas's birth registration, John shows his occupation as "Settler" and age "about 50".  While, Jane is aged 25. Little is know about Thomas's young life in Port Macquarie and Kempsey.  In October 1876, when Thomas was 19, he was injured in a horse riding accident at Long Flat, about 50 kms west of Port Macquarie.
